Steeped in village history

Berners Hall was originally built to substitute for St Michael's Church, Woolverstone, when the church was remodelled in the late 1800s. After that time it is thought to have served as a Reading Room, educating the village population and providing a place for recreation and meetings.

A stone memorial on the front lawn remembers the casualties of two World Wars. The hall remains part of the fabric of Woolverstone: a place to meet, mark occasions and bring village life together.

The Men's Room, the WI and village clubs

The Men's Room formed part of the hall. It was a meeting place for village men, who spent evenings playing bar games and enjoying refreshment away from the largely manual work of the time.

Woolverstone WI was founded in 1919, early in the organisation's history. It sadly ceased to exist in 1999, by which time many other village clubs had faded away. One club of note was the Pig Club, whose members shared the meat produced from animals reared by each household.
